How to Create a Quiz

A quiz can allow the creation of formal and informal learning assessments in a course.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Go to the Course/Structure screen in Course/Edit mode

  2. Click +Add or +Add learning...

  3. Select Quiz

  4. Type in your Quiz name and click enter

  5. On the right-hand panel click Edit to enter the Build screen.

Quiz Build Screen

  • Recommendation: Design your quiz off-line before starting the build in your portal. You must add all the required questions before starting to fill in the details.

  • There are four question types.

  • Quizzes can have a single question or multiple questions with a mix of types.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Drag the question types required from the list on the left-hand side to the box on the right.
  2. When you have all the questions required, hover over the top question and click Add to open the question edit screen (or double click the question bar).

To reorder questions, hover over a question until the cursor turns to a four-way arrow, click and drag.

Questions with a yellow triangle have not been set up.

Question Edit Screen

  • Provide the question details as described below.

  • Name only appears in Administration views and is not visible to Learners. Choose a name that will assist you when viewing the list of questions in the system.

Question Types

Multi-choice Question

  • Available as a stand-alone question or in quizzes
  • Question: pose a question for your users to answer

  • Answers: provide at least one correct answer. Click Add to create more than one answer. If providing more than one correct answer, users must select all correct answers to successfully pass the question.

  • The 'Yes' and 'No' button denotes the correct/incorrect answer(s).

  • Text for the answer is entered in the field to the right of each answer button.

  • A single answer can be provided (e.g. for an acknowledgement question)

  • To provide feedback on answers, click the three-dot button on each answer.

Example: choose the correct response to an emergency.

Matching Question

  • Available as a stand-alone question or in quizzes
  • Question: provide instructions for your users, e.g. "Match the statements on the left to the correct response on the right"

  • Lock: List questions or statements.

  • Key: List the responses to match the questions of statements

  • Note: Do not provide the Lock and Key lists in the correct order. Manually rearrange and/or select Shuffle answer on the right.

Example: provide a list of steps in a process on the left. Provide a list of numbers on the right. Provide instructions for users to order the steps by matching with the correct number.

Fill-in Blank Question

  • Available as a stand-alone question or in quizzes
  • Type a sentence with a blank to be completed or a drop-down list to be selected by the Learner.

  • Enclose a single word in square brackets to require the Learner to fill-in a blank with the correct word (e.g. The sky is '[blue]', will appear as "The sky is _____".

  • Enclose multiple words separated by a comma and space in square brackets to require the Learner to choose the correct word from a drop down list. Place the correct choice at the beginning of the list. (e.g. The sky is '[blue, green, red].')

Long-answer Question

  • Available only in quizzes
  • Pass rate: indicate the passing score out of 100.

  • Type in a question to be responded to by your users.

  • This question type requires a Content Administrator, Course Assessor or Manager mark it before the course shows as completed. Ensure your assessors are aware of the passing grade.

Quiz Configuration Screen

Taking Options: has a range of settings you can apply to quizzes. If you require further information or explanation for any of these please contact help desk.

Pass/Fail Options: allows you to set quiz pass rates and messages for users who pass or fail the quiz. 

Result Feedback: allows to you customise messages to users based on their quiz score.

Quiz Preview Screen

This screen allows you to take the quiz, see questions, answers and settings as a Learner. Your results in preview mode will not be registered against your training record.  Click Try Quiz to test the quiz.
